Dal Tadka is a popular Indian lentil dish made with arhar dal or masoor dal and tempered in oil with spices and herbs. A simple, yet flavorful Instant Pot Dal Tadka or Yellow Lentil soup along with pot-in-pot basmati rice. Dal tadka is very quick to prepare and can be ready in minutes. You can cook Tadka dal/lentil curry using 9 ingredients and 8 steps. Here is how you cook it.
Ingredients of Tadka dal/lentil curry
- You need 2 cups of lentil.
- It's 1 of whole garlic.
- It's to taste of Salt.
- You need of Cooking oil.
- Prepare 1 tbs of ghee.
- Prepare of Fenegreek seeds.
- It's of Corriander.
- Prepare 1/2 tsp of tumeric (add slightly more for extra colour).
- Prepare 1 of large onion.
It is one of the easiest to make for a week night dinner. The literal translation of Dal Tadka is Dal=lentil and tadka=tempering. Tadka or chaunk (in hindi) is a term we often use in Indian cooking for the process of adding seasoning to a dish. It mostly involves adding spices like cumin seeds, mustard seeds, garlic, chilies, curry leaves etc. to hot oil or ghee.
Tadka dal/lentil curry instructions
- Soak the lentils with hot water approx half hour, add 1 tbs salt when soaking.
- Crush the whole garlic in a mortar, cut the onion thinly.
- Put about 4-5 tsb oil in a pot add fenugree seeds & 2 bay leaves & stir for few sec. Keep some garlic aside for later and add in the rest and saute until brown. add the onion and saute until onion is lightly brown.
- Put salt as desired and cover with lid & simmer for few min.
- Put tumeric in and stir so lentils are soft and slightly mashed. Keep simmer until fully cooked.
- Add 1pint (1 3/4 cup) of water (add more or less depending on thickness to taste).
- Cover with lid (leave bit of gap) and cook on full heat for 10 minutes.
- On a seperate pan, heat 1tbs ghee and add the remaining garlic to fry until nicely brown. Once done, mix it into the curry and give it a good mix then garnish with coriander.
This dal tadka is not just a regular dal. There is a simple trick that I have which makes sure it's a garlicky, smoky dal tadka that is unforgettable! If you have some coal, you can use the coal trick mentioned in the recipe. But even if you don't, the trick is to add tadka, cover and leave the the dal for. Tadka Daal is mild and easy to cook so will be loved by family members of all ages.
